Lobuche East vs Lobuche West: what is the difference?

3 min read

The name Lobuche covers two summits on the same ridge, but they are treated very differently by the authorities and by climbers. Mixing them up can lead to confusion when you book.

Lobuche East

This is the summit that appears on the list of trekking peaks, and it is the one most visitors climb. It is also called Lobuche Peak in many brochures. The permit is issued through the Nepal Mountaineering Association, and the climb is accessible to well-prepared people with a guide.

Lobuche West

This summit is part of the expedition peak category and has a separate permit system, with greater technical demands. It is rarely climbed and is intended for experienced mountaineers with a specialised team.

Why it matters

  • Permit type: The two are not covered by the same permit.
  • Difficulty: West is much harder and more committing.
  • Support: West needs a more experienced team and different equipment.

When you book

Check that your quote and permit refer to the correct summit. If a brochure says Lobuche Peak, it almost always means Lobuche East. Ask your operator to confirm in writing.

Which should you choose?

For nearly everyone, Lobuche East is the realistic choice. If you are an experienced mountaineer who wants a harder objective, talk to us about the options.

Send your experience and we will explain what suits you.

Know which peak you are booking

Lobuche East is the standard trekking peak; Lobuche West is a separate summit with a different permit category and generally more serious climbing. Confirm in writing which peak your itinerary targets to avoid confusion about permits, fees and difficulty.

Why operators may use the name loosely

Some descriptions use Lobuche Peak without specifying the summit. Ask clear questions about the route, the permit and the technical level so you understand exactly what you are paying for.

Making the right choice

Most climbers aiming for a first Himalayan peak choose Lobuche East. Lobuche West is better suited to experienced alpinists with strong technical skills.

Details to confirm in writing

Ask the operator to state clearly in the contract which summit you will attempt, which permit applies and what is included. Confusion can lead to unexpected costs or disappointment. A reputable operator will not mind answering.

Difficulty differences

Lobuche West is typically considered more technical, with steeper sections and more exposure. Only experienced climbers with good skills and fitness should attempt it. Lobuche East suits climbers with trekking experience and some basic mountaineering exposure.

Making your decision

Choose according to your skills and goals, and be honest about your experience. Talk to guides, ask about conditions and consider starting with the East summit before progressing to more demanding peaks.
