Lower Mustang suits short walks. With a flight or drive to Jomsom, you can fit a good trek into a few days. Here are options, from easy day hikes to a three or four-day route.
Jomsom to Kagbeni (half to full day)
Figures are approximate, and small differences between maps and your own watch are normal.
A walk along the riverbed or the road, with wide views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. It takes three to four hours, with afternoon wind in your face, so start early. Kagbeni is an atmospheric village with mud-brick houses, narrow lanes and a monastery.
Kagbeni to Muktinath via Jharkot (full day)
A climb from Kagbeni to Jharkot and Muktinath, passing high terraces and a view of the valley. It gains about 900 m, so it is a long day. Alternatively, ride up and walk down for an easier day.
Lupra and the Bon village
Lupra is a village near Jomsom that follows the Bon religion, an older pre-Buddhist tradition in Tibet. A day trip takes you up a side valley to the village, where you can see a different religious culture. Ask permission before visiting temples.
Dhumba Lake
A small lake near Jomsom, reached by a short walk. It is quiet and peaceful, with views of the mountains. Combine with a visit to Thini or other nearby villages.
Thini village
A short trip from Jomsom to Thini, with a monastery and good views. It can be combined with other short walks.
A three-day route
- Day 1: Fly to Jomsom, walk to Kagbeni.
- Day 2: Kagbeni to Muktinath via Jharkot.
- Day 3: Muktinath to Jomsom by jeep or on foot, or continue to Marpha.
Add-ons
If you have more time, extend your trip with the Kali Gandaki valley walk to Tatopani, or combine with Poon Hill. See Jomsom to Tatopani. For a longer journey into the restricted area, see our Upper Mustang guides or the Upper Mustang trek page.

What to carry on a day hike
- Two litres of water and snacks.
- Windproof jacket, sun hat and sunscreen.
- Warm layer, since temperatures fall quickly in the shade.
