What is Lower Mustang? Jomsom, Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath explained

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Mustang is a district in northwest Nepal, and people use "Lower Mustang" to mean the open, non-restricted southern part: the Kali Gandaki valley around Jomsom, Marpha and Kagbeni, with the pilgrimage site of Muktinath nearby. Upper Mustang, the old Kingdom of Lo beyond Kagbeni, is a separate restricted area. This page explains the difference and what Lower Mustang offers.

The geography

Timings depend on your pace and the weather, and heights vary a little by source, so treat them as a guide.

The Kali Gandaki river runs south from the Tibetan plateau, cutting through the Himalaya between Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and the Annapurna massif (Annapurna I, 8,091 m). The upper valley is called Thak Khola, after the Thakali people who live there. The valley is dry, windy and high: Jomsom is at about 2,720 m, Marpha at about 2,670 m and Kagbeni at about 2,800 m. Muktinath lies higher, on the side of the valley, at about 3,710 m.

What counts as Lower Mustang

  • Jomsom, the district hub, with an airport and offices.
  • Marpha, known for apples and a well-kept old village.
  • Tukuche, Kobang, Larjung and Kalopani, along the old trade route.
  • Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang.
  • Jharkot and Muktinath, on the pilgrimage side valley.

Upper Mustang begins beyond Kagbeni, where a restricted-area checkpoint controls entry. See Upper Mustang vs Lower Mustang and Muktinath for a comparison.

What makes it special

  • Dramatic scenery: a deep valley between two giant mountains, with barren slopes and snow peaks.
  • Mixed cultures: Thakali, Tibetan-influenced Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims.
  • A famous apple-growing area and a tradition of fine local food.
  • Easy access by air from Pokhara and by road.
  • No restricted-area permit needed for the standard route.

Who goes there

Pilgrims, Circuit trekkers, short-trek hikers, photographers and people looking for a gentler introduction to Himalayan culture. It is a good option for travellers with limited time, those who dislike very high altitude or those interested in culture and landscape more than a pass crossing.

How to get there

Most visitors fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, a flight of about 20 minutes, or drive on the road from Beni. Trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit arrive from the north via Muktinath. See getting to Jomsom.

Permits

Lower Mustang falls within the Annapurna Conservation Area, so the entry fee applies. Trekking routes in the region are on the list that requires an agency-issued TIMS card and a licensed guide for many routes; confirm what applies to your plan. See Annapurna permits, TIMS card and guide rules.

What to read next

Explore Marpha and Thakali culture, visiting the Muktinath temple complex and short treks and day hikes.

A simple itinerary idea

For a five-day introduction: fly to Jomsom, walk to Kagbeni, climb to Muktinath through Jharkot, return to Jomsom, visit Marpha, then fly back. It gives you a taste of desert scenery, two religions, Thakali hospitality and a day of easy hiking, with limited altitude.

Who might choose Upper Mustang instead

Travellers who want the walled city of Lo Manthang, cave monasteries and a deeper sense of remoteness may prefer Upper Mustang. That needs a restricted-area permit, more days and a bigger budget. See our Upper Mustang trek page.
