Manaslu Circuit: why a guide and agency permit are required

3 min read

The Manaslu Circuit and the Tsum Valley are on the list of trekking routes where a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card are mandatory. The restricted-area permit is also applied for through a registered agency.

How the system works

A registered trekking agency enters your details, the guide's details and the route into the online system, pays the fees and issues an eCard with a QR code for each trekker. Checkposts along the way verify the documents.

Solo travellers

You do not need a large group. A single traveller can go with one guide, though the cost per person is higher because there is no one to share the expenses. Whether a minimum group size applies to restricted areas can change, so we check the current position when you enquire.

Why the rules exist

The rules support safety, since the route is remote and rescue is difficult, and they help to manage visitor numbers in a sensitive region. They also create work for local guides.

What your guide does

  • Handles checkposts and paperwork on the trail.
  • Judges conditions on the pass.
  • Helps with lodges, food and communication.
  • Responds to illness or emergencies.

Do not

  • Buy permits from unregistered sellers.
  • Leave the agreed route.
  • Rely on being able to arrange a guide at the trailhead.

Rules can change, so confirm them before booking. We handle all arrangements.

How the guide helps in practice

Your guide arranges lodging, monitors your health, deals with permit checks and manages the pace. He or she also interprets local customs and can speak to villagers and lodge owners on your behalf. In remote areas, this role is vital for safety and for a smooth trek.

Group size and permits

Restricted-area permits typically need a minimum number of trekkers, so operators group solo travellers together or ask them to pay a supplement. Ask how your operator handles this and whether you will have a fixed departure date. If your plans change, find out what the consequences are.

Your role as a trekker

Follow your guide's instructions on health and safety, respect local culture and keep to the schedule where possible. Tell the guide immediately if you feel unwell or have concerns. Give honest feedback at the end, because it helps guides and agencies improve.

Reminders

  • Always carry copies of your permits.
  • Do not wander off the route without telling your guide.
  • Pay your guide and porters fairly and on time.

Choosing a good guide

Look for a licensed guide with experience on Larkya La, first-aid training and good references. Ask how many Manaslu treks they have led and how they handle bad weather and altitude. A good guide shares knowledge, keeps the group safe and respects local culture.

Being a good group member

  • Respect the pace of others.
  • Follow the guide's instructions.
  • Share information about your health.
  • Help with small tasks at lodges.
