Manaslu Circuit in monsoon and winter: risks and options

3 min read

Most people choose autumn or spring for Manaslu, but some trekkers consider the other seasons for quieter trails or lower permit fees. It is possible, but it needs honest planning.

Monsoon, June to August

The lower valley receives heavy rain, which means mud, leeches and a higher risk of landslides on the trail and roads. Rivers swell, and bridges or sections of trail can be damaged. Views are often hidden by cloud. Higher up, the climate is drier, but the pass is still a serious crossing. Schedules need generous buffer days.

Winter, December to February

Days are short and nights are very cold. Snow on Larkya La can close the pass, and some lodges in the upper villages shut for the season. If you go, you need proper winter gear, flexibility and an experienced guide who will turn back when conditions are unsafe.

Permit fees

According to the schedule supplied to us, the restricted-area permit is cheaper from December to August than from September to November. A lower fee does not make the trek easier, so weigh it against the conditions.

Better alternatives

If you must travel in these seasons, consider a shorter or lower trek, or a route in the rain shadow, such as Upper Mustang during the monsoon.

If you go anyway

  • Travel with a guide who knows the local conditions.
  • Check road and trail updates close to your departure.
  • Carry rain gear or winter clothing, as appropriate.
  • Buy insurance that covers delays and evacuation.

Monsoon realities

In the monsoon, rain makes trails slippery, leeches appear in lower forests and landslides can cut roads and paths. Views are often hidden by clouds. The upper valley is somewhat drier but still receives rain and snow. Plans may change daily, and the trek requires extra spare days. For these reasons, many operators do not run Manaslu at this time of year.

Winter realities

In winter, snow covers the upper valley, and the Larkya La crossing may be impossible or very risky for long periods. Lodges may be closed and temperatures very low. Only experienced trekkers with proper equipment and a flexible schedule should consider it, and even then the pass may be closed.

Better alternatives

If your holiday is in these months, consider treks that suit the season, such as the lower valleys of the Annapurna region in winter, or the rain-shadow areas of Mustang and Dolpo in the monsoon. Ask your operator for suggestions that give you a good experience.

If you still want to go

  • Travel with an experienced operator and guide.
  • Allow plenty of spare days and a flexible return.
  • Prepare for cold, wet conditions and remote logistics.

Practical consequences

In monsoon, landslides can close the road, and trails can be dangerous. In winter, Larkya La can be impassable and lodges may close. These risks can disrupt plans and raise costs. Choosing spring or autumn avoids most problems.

If you have no choice

Choose an experienced operator, build in extra days, carry proper gear and be ready to change plans. Consider Tsum Valley, which is lower and more accessible in some off-season periods.
