Gear and Packing

Manaslu Circuit packing list: layers, pass gear and extras

3 min read

The Manaslu Circuit moves from warm, humid valleys to a cold, snowy pass. Your kit should handle both ends, while staying light enough for the long days.

Clothing

  • Light base layers and a quick-drying shirt for low valley days.
  • Warm thermal layers, fleece and a down jacket for high camps.
  • A waterproof shell jacket and trousers.
  • Trekking trousers and a pair of shorts for warm days.
  • Warm hat, sun hat, buff and two pairs of gloves, including a warm pair for the pass.

Footwear

Waterproof, broken-in boots with ankle support are important for wet lower trails and snow. Bring camp shoes, several pairs of socks and blister care. Gaiters help in snow.

Sleeping

A sleeping bag suited to cold nights and a liner for extra warmth. A lightweight sleeping mat is unnecessary because lodges provide mattresses.

Pass essentials

  • Sunglasses with strong UV protection, or goggles.
  • Traction devices if recommended by your guide.
  • Trekking poles, which are very useful on the long descent.
  • Headlamp and spare batteries for the early start.

Everyday items

Water bottles, purification tablets, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, lip balm, power bank, small towel and toiletries. Bring leech socks or salt for the monsoon months.

Weight

Your porter will have a weight limit, so ask your operator before you pack. Leave non-essentials at your hotel in Kathmandu.

Extra items for the cold camps

The highest lodges and the pass day call for extra warmth. Bring a heavier down jacket, insulated gloves or mittens, a warm hat and a balaclava or neck gaiter. Chemical hand warmers can be a comfort on cold mornings. Insulated water bottle covers or a thermos prevent freezing.

Footwear and traction

Choose well-fitted, waterproof boots with ankle support, and bring gaiters if snow is likely. Microspikes or light traction devices can be valuable on icy sections. Make sure your socks are warm and moisture-wicking, and carry spare pairs. Test everything on long walks beforehand.

Staying organised

Use stuff sacks or zip bags to keep items sorted and dry. Keep medicines, documents and a small first-aid kit in your daypack. Label your duffel and use a lock if you wish. Keep the weight within the limit your operator suggests.

Do not forget

  • A headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses with good protection.
  • A water purification system and reusable bottle.

Pass-day gear in your daypack

Pack a down jacket, hard shell, warm gloves, a balaclava, sunglasses, microspikes, a thermos, snacks, a headlamp and spare batteries. Keep a first-aid kit and sunscreen accessible. These items make the pass day safer and more comfortable.

Weight and porters

Porter weight limits are typically around 10 to 12 kilograms per trekker, so pack carefully. Compress your sleeping bag, roll clothes and avoid duplicates. If you are over the limit, discuss options with your operator beforehand.
