Mera Peak is remote, and signal is poor in the Hinku valley. Charging is paid and batteries drain in the cold.
Signal
Lukla and Chutanga may have signal. The Hinku valley mostly has none. Expect days without contact.
Wi-Fi
Rare. Some lodges sell cards, but speeds are poor and not always working.
Charging
Limited and expensive. Bring a power bank and a small solar panel, and keep batteries warm.
Emergency
Guides carry satellite phones or radios. Ask your agency about the plan and share it with family.
Why you should expect silence
Much of the Mera Peak trek has no signal, so treat it as a digital break. Tell family you will be out of contact for several days at a time. Your guide will use a satellite phone or radio to update the agency, and the agency can pass on messages.
Power for a long trip
A three-week trip needs more battery planning than a short trek. Carry two power banks, a solar panel and spare batteries for your head torch. Keep everything in a dry bag. A cable and charger that supports fast charging helps when power is limited.
Expect long gaps
Between Lukla and base camp there are days with no signal at all. Treat this as part of the experience. Keep your phone in airplane mode to preserve battery and use it as a camera and notebook. Tell family to expect updates every few days at best.
Staying safe
Share your itinerary with family and your embassy if you wish. Make sure your operator has a plan for communication and evacuation. Satellite phones are standard for good operators.
Preparation
Download maps and tell family when you will be out of contact. See camps and lodges.
Plan the last signal point
Send your last messages from Lukla or Khote. Beyond that, signal is rare.
Cold and electronics
Store your phone in an inner pocket on climb days. Cold shortens battery life dramatically.
Satellite backup
Ask your operator about satellite communication. It is the only reliable option in remote camps.
Khare and Lukla
Lukla and Khare are the last places with a good chance of signal. Past Khare, assume none. Take a power bank and keep your phone warm.
