Mera Peak month by month: weather, crowds and conditions

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The best months for Mera Peak are April to May and October to November. Winter is bitterly cold and the monsoon brings cloud and snow.

December to February

Extremely cold, with strong winds. Not recommended for most climbers.

March

Cold with deep snow. Conditions improve late in the month, and crowds are light.

April and May

The main spring window with stable weather. Temperatures are bearable and the glacier is snow-covered.

June to September

Monsoon cloud and snow. Not recommended. Late September begins to improve.

What the Hinku valley feels like

In spring the valley is quieter and the snow is deeper. In autumn the trail is dry and the nights are very cold. Wind on Mera La and on the glacier can be strong, so teams start before dawn. Pick a window when the forecast is stable.

Daylight and temperature

Daylight is about eleven hours in October and thirteen in May. Temperatures at base camp range from minus 5 to minus 15 at night. At the summit, wind chill can be lower than minus 25. Dress in layers and protect your hands and face.

Crowding and camps

Mera Peak is one of the most popular trekking peaks, and in peak weeks Khare and the high camp are busy. Starting your summit attempt slightly earlier or later than the main crowd can make the climb smoother. Ask your guide about the plan for avoiding queues.

Weather reading

Afternoon cloud and wind are common. Teams start at night to be back at high camp by midday. A calm, clear morning is the best sign.

October and November

The prime autumn window with clear skies and firm snow. Nights are very cold. See the best time guide.

Windows for the summit

Climbers target spring and autumn when winds are weaker. Pick dates that leave a spare day for weather.

Cold nights at high camp

High camp is very cold, even in good months. A warm sleeping bag and insulated layers are essential.

Wind and cold on the glacier

Even in good months, the final slopes are windy. Climbers start in the early morning, when the air is calmest, and aim to be back before afternoon winds build.
