Poon Hill trek: quick planning answers

3 min read

How high is Poon Hill?

Poon Hill is about 3,210 metres above sea level. Ghorepani, where most trekkers sleep before the sunrise climb, is at about 2,860 metres. These heights are low enough that most healthy adults trek comfortably, though mild altitude symptoms are possible.

How many days does the Poon Hill trek take?

Four or five days from Pokhara to Pokhara is typical. A three-day rush is possible with transport help, and extended itineraries run to seven days or more with the Ghandruk loop or ABC connection.

Can I do Poon Hill without a guide?

Many independent trekkers do. The trail is well marked and villages are close together. A guide is helpful for the pre-dawn climb, peak-season lodge booking and emergencies, and rules on guides can change, so check when you book.

What is the best month for Poon Hill?

March and April for rhododendron flowers, and October and November for clear skies. Winter is cold but clear, and the monsoon is wet with poor views.

Is Poon Hill crowded?

It can be busy, especially at sunrise in spring and autumn. Leaving early, choosing weekdays and walking a little beyond the main viewpoint help you find space.

Do I need to be very fit?

You need basic fitness and the ability to climb stairs for several hours. Regular walking for six to eight weeks is usually enough for beginners.

Can I do Poon Hill in winter?

Yes, with warm clothing and flexible dates. Snow may make trails slippery and nights are freezing, but the skies are clear and trails are quiet.

Is it a good trek for a first-time visitor to Nepal?

Yes. It is short, scenic, culturally rich and has comfortable lodges, which makes it a popular first Himalayan experience.

Is Poon Hill better than Annapurna Base Camp?

They suit different goals. Poon Hill is shorter, easier and focuses on one great sunrise. Annapurna Base Camp is longer, more demanding and takes you into the high mountain amphitheatre. Many trekkers do Poon Hill first and ABC later, or combine them in one trip.

Can I do Poon Hill in three days?

Yes, with a jeep ride to a higher trailhead. It is rushed, tiring and leaves little time to enjoy the villages. Four or five days is far more comfortable and still easy to fit into a long weekend.

What if the sunrise is cloudy?

Cloud can hide the view. Spare days or a second morning give another chance. Even on cloudy days, the forest and villages are worth the walk, and cloud often lifts later in the morning.

Do I need to train for Poon Hill?

Basic fitness is enough. Walking and stair training for six to eight weeks helps, especially for knees. If you are a regular walker, you may need very little extra preparation.

Can I do Poon Hill as a day trip from Pokhara?

No. It requires at least one overnight in Ghorepani for the sunrise. Some people do a very fast three-day version, but a day trip is not possible.
