Tamang culture and villages on the heritage trail

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Tamang Heritage Trail is about people as much as mountains. The villages keep their Tibetan Buddhist traditions, with stone houses, prayer walls and festivals. Visit with respect, ask before taking photographs and stay in a homestay if you can.

Gatlang and Thuman

These villages have a long Tamang history, with large stone houses and monasteries. The monasteries often hold old paintings and ritual objects.

Tatopani hot springs

The hot springs are a local resource and a pleasant stop after a long climb. Respect local rules about use and clothing.

Food

Expect dal bhat, local potatoes, buckwheat bread and butter tea. Ask your host about local dishes.

Customs

Walk clockwise around prayer walls and stupas. Dress modestly and ask before entering monasteries.

Supporting communities

Staying in homestays and buying local goods puts money straight into the village.

Festivals

Tamang festivals such as Lhosar, the new year, bring dancing and feasts. If your trip falls in the right month, ask your guide whether a festival is being held.

Handicrafts and gifts

Local shops sell woollen goods, thangka-style paintings and small crafts. Buying directly helps families.
