Tent Peak is graded Alpine PD (a little difficult) on the north-west ridge, the normal route. It is easier than most technical peaks but still needs crampons, an ice axe, rope work and a guide. Operators run it in April and May or in October and November.
Grade and terrain
The normal north-west ridge is rated Alpine PD. One climbing source describes a fluted wall of roughly 120 to 180 m at 45 to 55 degrees, followed by a narrow ridge, about 45 m long at roughly 50 degrees, near the top.
Camps
Operators place base camp at about 4,200 to 4,450 m and high camp at about 5,000 to 5,200 m. The exact sites differ by operator and season.
Season
The usual seasons are April to May and October to November, matching the Annapurna Base Camp trek. See the best time for the Annapurna Base Camp trek.
Permit and fees
A climbing permit is arranged through a registered agency, and the Annapurna entry fees apply to the Sanctuary. Fees and group-size rules change, so ask your agency for a current written quote.
Who it suits
Fit trekkers who have been to Annapurna Base Camp and want a first snow peak with a guide. Practise with crampons and an ice axe first. See how hard the Annapurna Base Camp trek is.
Common questions
- Do I need experience? Basic snow skills help, and a guide teaches the rest.
- Can I climb it on the Annapurna Base Camp trek? It is a separate climb that adds days after the trek.
- What gear is needed? Mountaineering boots, crampons, an ice axe, a harness and warm layers.
- Is it risk-free? No. Weather and snow conditions decide whether an attempt goes ahead.
