Cho La is the technical pass of the Three Passes trek, at about 5,420 m between Gokyo and Dzongla. It combines a steep rocky climb with a small glacier crossing and needs an early start, good footing and a guide who reads the conditions.
Where it sits
Cho La links the Gokyo side (via Dragnag or Thangnak) with Dzongla near Lobuche. It is usually the second pass in the clockwise-from-Renjo order. See the three passes compared.
The day in outline
Start in the dark or at first light. The climb to the pass is steep and loose, then the descent crosses a small glacier before a rocky drop toward Dzongla. Expect a long day of six to eight hours or more depending on conditions and group pace.
Hazards
Rockfall and slips on loose scree, a changing glacier surface, ice on rock and sudden weather. Microspikes are often needed, and a rope or guide support may be used on some years. Move one at a time on loose sections.
Timing and conditions
Early starts are important: afternoon cloud, wind and softer snow make the crossing harder later in the day. After fresh snow, the route may be delayed or avoided.
Preparing
Cross it only once you are well acclimatised, ideally after rest days at Gokyo. Carry warm layers, gloves, sunglasses, microspikes and trekking poles. See the packing list and how hard the trek is.
Reading the terrain
The crossing involves a rocky ascent to the pass, a stretch over a glacier with loose boulders and meltwater channels, and a steep descent on scree. Visibility matters because cairns can be hard to see in cloud. Your guide will choose the safest line on the day and may suggest microspikes if the surface is icy.
Time of day
Start early. Mornings usually have firm ground and calm weather. By afternoon the wind and cloud increase and the snow softens. A late start can turn a manageable crossing into a risky one, so be ready to leave before dawn when conditions require.
If you need an alternative
If conditions are unsafe your guide may delay a day or turn back, so ask your operator what plan B applies and keep a spare day. See the Cho La guide from the Gokyo side and the direction guide clockwise or anticlockwise.
