Gear and Packing

Three Passes trek packing list

2 min read

The Three Passes needs more gear than a classic Everest trek, because you will spend two weeks above 4,000 m, cross three passes and face nights well below freezing. The aim is to carry enough to stay warm and safe without exceeding the weight limit your porter and flight allow. Typical limits are around 10 to 12 kg for the main bag, so choose carefully.

Clothing system

  • Thermal base layers, top and bottom, two sets.
  • Mid layers, such as fleece or light insulated jacket.
  • A warm down jacket for evenings and pass days.
  • A waterproof and windproof shell jacket and trousers.
  • Trekking trousers and a spare pair.
  • Warm hat, sun hat, buff and balaclava.
  • Liner gloves and warm insulated gloves or mittens.
  • Several pairs of wool socks and liners.

Footwear

Bring well broken-in, waterproof boots with ankle support and a stiff sole, and camp shoes for the evenings. Gaiters help in snow. For Cho La and sometimes Kongma La, microspikes or light crampons may be needed depending on conditions. Your operator will advise, and some provide them, so ask in advance.

Sleeping and carrying

A sleeping bag rated to about minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius is a good choice, with a liner. Bring a duffel bag for the porter and a daypack of 25 to 35 litres with a rain cover. Trekking poles are strongly recommended, because the descents are long and hard on the knees.

Pass-day extras

  • Headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Sunglasses with side protection, plus a spare pair if possible.
  • Thermos or insulated bottle.
  • Snacks, such as nuts, chocolate and energy bars.
  • Sun cream and lip balm with high protection.

Health and hygiene

Pack a personal first-aid kit, blister plasters, rehydration salts, water purification, hand sanitiser, toilet paper and wet wipes. Bring personal medicines in their original packaging with a note from your doctor.

What to leave in Kathmandu

Leave jeans, cotton clothes, extra gadgets and valuables at your hotel. Rent or buy items such as down jackets and sleeping bags in Kathmandu if you do not own them, but test them before you leave the city.
