Tell your guide at once. Mild symptoms may improve with rest at the same height, while worsening symptoms mean you must descend. Do not go higher while ill.
Is a helicopter evacuation possible?
Yes in many places, depending on weather and landing sites, and it needs good insurance. Check that your policy covers it and that your operator has a clear rescue plan.
Is the glacier on Cho La dangerous?
It is a small glacier that needs care. Conditions vary with snow and season, and guides decide whether microspikes are needed. Follow the guide's steps and keep the group together.
How cold does it get?
Nights at Gokyo, Dzongla, Lobuche and Gorak Shep are often well below freezing in autumn and colder in winter. A warm sleeping bag and layers are essential.
Can I drink the tap water?
No. Use boiled, filtered or treated water. Carry purification tablets or a filter bottle.
Is there mobile signal?
Signal is patchy. Paid wifi is available at some lodges, and local SIM cards work in some places. Tell family not to expect daily calls.
