What affects the cost of the Three Passes trek

2 min read

The Three Passes trek costs more than the classic Everest Base Camp route because it is longer, higher and needs more staff time and safety planning. Prices between operators can differ a lot, so it helps to understand what is behind the number before you compare.

What drives the price

  • Trip length. A 21 day plan has more guide, porter and lodging days than a 14 day trek.
  • Group size. Private treks cost more per person than group departures.
  • Flights. Kathmandu to Lukla and back is a large and variable cost, especially if flights are moved to a different airport.
  • Guide and porter support. Experienced guides who have crossed the passes many times and fairly paid staff are an important part of the price.
  • Lodging level and meals. Standard teahouses cost less than upgraded lodges.
  • Season. Autumn is the busiest and often the most expensive.

What a good package should include

Look for airport transfers, Kathmandu hotel nights, domestic flights, permits, a licensed guide, porter support, lodging and meals during the trek, staff wages and insurance, and a first-aid kit with an oximeter. Check whether a rescue plan or a helicopter evacuation arrangement is mentioned. If an item is not stated, ask.

Extras to budget for

Even on an all-inclusive trip you will pay for drinks, snacks, hot showers, device charging, wifi, tips, travel insurance and personal gear. Prices of these items rise with altitude. Bring enough cash in Nepali rupees, because ATMs stop working well beyond Namche.

Why very cheap quotes are a warning

A quote that is far below others usually means fewer rest days, weaker staff conditions, no spare day or no real rescue plan. On a route with three high passes, those savings carry real risk. Ask for the day-by-day plan and compare it line by line.

How to compare quotes

Ask each operator for the same details: number of days, rest days, group size, guide experience, permits included, flight terms and what happens if a pass is closed. A price only makes sense once those are the same.
