Getting to the trailheads from Pokhara

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Most treks start within one to three hours of Pokhara by road. Nayapul is the usual start for Ghorepani and Annapurna Base Camp, Phedi and Kande for the short walks, and Siwai or Kalimati for Mardi Himal. Taxis and local buses both run.

Nayapul

About one and a half hours by road. It is the start for Ghorepani Poon Hill, Ghandruk and Annapurna Base Camp.

Phedi and Kande

Close to Pokhara, about 30 to 40 minutes by road, for Australian Camp and Dhampus.

Mardi Himal

Reached through Kande or Siwai, depending on the route.

Taxi or bus

Taxis are quick and flexible. Local buses are cheaper and slower.

Tips

Leave early so you arrive at the first lodge in good light. Keep valuables with you.

Cost and booking

Taxis charge by the vehicle, so sharing helps. Your agency can book the transfer, which avoids haggling and delays.

Return transfers

Pre-arrange your return pickup if you finish in a different place, such as Jomsom or Besisahar. Flights from Jomsom are weather dependent.
