Short treks from Pokhara include Australian Camp (one or two nights), Dhampus and Landruk (two to three days), Ghorepani Poon Hill (four days) and Mardi Himal (four to five days). All have lodges, mountain views and an easy return to Pokhara.
Australian Camp
A gentle one or two night walk from Kande to a ridge at about 2,000 m. It has views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. A good choice for families and beginners.
Dhampus and Landruk
A two to three day walk through villages and terraces with mountain views. The effort is low and the cultural interest is high.
Ghorepani Poon Hill
A four to five day trek over rhododendron forest to the Poon Hill sunrise viewpoint at about 3,200 m. It is the most popular short trek in the region.
Mardi Himal
A four to six day ridge trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp at about 4,500 m. It is quieter and higher, and the views are closer.
What to expect
Lodges are simple but comfortable, with hot tea, dal bhat and warm blankets. You can carry a light pack with a guide, or use a porter.
Good for families
Australian Camp and Dhampus are good for children and older travellers, because the walking days are short. Poon Hill is longer, and the early start for sunrise is cold.
What to pack
Bring layers, a rain jacket, sturdy shoes, sun protection and a head torch. A small daypack is enough if a porter carries the main bag.
