How to reach Jomsom and Kagbeni for Upper Mustang

3 min read

Almost every Upper Mustang trip starts in the Kali Gandaki valley at Jomsom. From there, Kagbeni is the gateway to the restricted zone.

By air from Pokhara

The flight is short and scenic and saves a long road day. Flights usually run in the morning because the wind in the valley picks up later. Cloud or wind can delay or cancel flights, and the schedule can change from season to season. Keep a spare day in your plan, and avoid tight onward connections.

By road

A road runs from Pokhara through Beni and up the valley. It can be a long, bumpy journey, often taking most of a day or more, and it is affected by landslides in the monsoon. Travelling by road lets you see the landscape change and helps you acclimatise gradually, which some trekkers prefer.

From Jomsom to Kagbeni

Kagbeni is a short distance north of Jomsom. You can walk beside the river or take a vehicle. Permits and TIMS details are checked at the entrance to the restricted zone, so keep your documents handy.

Combining the two

Some travellers fly one way and return by road to avoid being stuck in Jomsom if the weather is poor on the way back.

Tips

  • Fly in the morning when possible.
  • Pack essentials in your carry-on bag in case checked luggage arrives later.
  • Check recent road conditions before departing from Pokhara.
  • Carry cash, as there may be limited machines.

The flight experience

The flight from Pokhara to Jomsom follows the Kali Gandaki valley, passing between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, and many passengers consider it one of the most spectacular short flights in the world. The planes are small, the landing is brief and the weather can change quickly. Sit on the left side on the way in if you want the best views, and keep your camera ready.

When flights are delayed

Wind and cloud often delay or cancel flights, especially in the afternoon or in unsettled weather. Your operator may hold seats on several departures or offer a vehicle option. Keep your schedule flexible and have a plan for a night in Pokhara or Jomsom. If you have a connection after the trek, include a buffer day in case of delay.

The road alternative

The road journey from Pokhara to Jomsom takes a full day or more and passes through changing landscapes and villages. It can be rough and dusty, so it is better in a sturdy vehicle with a good driver. It is a good option if flights are not available or if you want to see the valley at ground level, but be prepared for long hours.

Travel tips

  • Carry warm clothes in your hand luggage, since mornings can be chilly at Jomsom.
  • Keep your permits and passport with you at all times.
  • Confirm check-in times, because small airlines often adjust schedules.

Flight tips

Morning flights are more reliable because wind builds later in the day. Carry essentials in hand luggage and keep a flexible schedule. Delays and cancellations are common, so allow spare days.

Road conditions

The Kali Gandaki road is rough, dusty and affected by landslides in the monsoon. It is an adventure in itself, with dramatic scenery along the world's deepest gorge. A 4x4 vehicle and an experienced driver are essential.
