Upper Mustang for Indian travellers: documents and fees

3 min read

Upper Mustang is open to Indian trekkers, and many Indian travellers combine it with a pilgrimage to Muktinath. The process is the same as for other nationalities, except for lower fees on some items.

Permits

  • Restricted area permit: USD 50 per person per day, as supplied to us. Confirm the latest figure before booking, as rates can change.
  • TIMS: NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals, issued through an agency.
  • Annapurna Conservation Area entry: NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals, per entry.

A licensed guide is required on this route, and the agency registers you, the guide and the route.

Identity documents

Carry the passport or voter ID that you used to enter Nepal, plus photocopies and passport-size photos. Check the latest entry rules before you travel, as they may change.

Money

Carry Nepali rupees for the trek. Some places may accept Indian currency, but this cannot be assumed, particularly in remote villages. Withdraw enough in Pokhara, because machines are limited further north.

Health and food

Vegetarian meals are widely available. Mention any dietary restrictions to your guide and lodge. If you are travelling with older parents, plan for rest days and speak to a doctor before departing.

Pilgrimage option

Many travellers include Muktinath and Kagbeni on the way. Allow time for the temple visit before heading north into the restricted zone.

Tell us your group size and travel dates and we will prepare the paperwork.

Getting ready in India

Start the paperwork early, since restricted-area permits take time. Send your operator clear scans of your identity documents and photographs, and tell them your travel dates. Check which identification document you will use for flights and checkpoints. Keep printed copies of everything, and save digital copies in your phone and email.

Combining with Muktinath

Many Indian travellers combine Upper Mustang with a visit to Muktinath, a sacred site, which adds spiritual meaning to the trip. Plan the sequence so that you adapt gradually to altitude, and include extra days for flight delays. Discuss with your operator how to arrange the pilgrimage portion, including the timing of rituals and arrangements for older family members.

Food and comfort

Vegetarian meals are easy to find in most lodges, but options become simpler in remote villages. Carry some familiar snacks and tell the operator about any dietary needs in advance. Be ready for basic rooms and shared toilets, and bring warm clothing for cold nights.

Checklist

  • Confirm the permit rates that apply to you with the operator.
  • Carry enough Nepali rupees for the trek.
  • Arrange insurance that covers high altitude and evacuation.

Restricted-area paperwork

Indian travellers should check the current permit category and fee, carry identity documents and copies, and provide photographs. Your operator will handle most of the process, but you should carry originals and copies on the trek.

Cultural and religious sites

Many Indian trekkers combine Upper Mustang with Muktinath, which is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. Plan the sequence carefully, since flights and road conditions affect timing.
