Upper Mustang: quick answers for planning

4 min read

How many days do I need for Upper Mustang?

Plan on about ten to fourteen days from Pokhara and back, depending on your transport and rest days.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. A restricted-area permit, charged per day, and a TIMS card are required, and both must be arranged through a registered agency.

How much is the daily permit fee?

The figure supplied to us is USD 50 per person per day. It may change, so confirm it before booking.

Is a guide compulsory?

Yes. A licensed guide is required on the Upper Mustang route.

Can I go in the monsoon?

Yes, because of the rain shadow, though access by road and flight can be affected. Keep spare days.

When is the Tiji festival?

It is usually in spring, with dates set by the Tibetan lunar calendar. Check the dates for your year.

Can I fly to Jomsom?

Yes, from Pokhara. Flights depend on weather and usually operate in the morning.

Can I combine Upper Mustang with Muktinath?

Yes. Many travellers visit Muktinath on the way or at the end of the trek.

Is the trek suitable for children?

It can be, with care about altitude and wind. Talk to us about the age and pace.

How far ahead should I book?

Several weeks at least, longer for the festival or peak autumn months, so permits and lodges can be arranged.

What should I do if my flight to Jomsom is cancelled?

Stay calm and speak to your operator, who will usually rebook you for the next available flight or arrange a road journey. Keep a spare day in your plan, and make sure your insurance and onward bookings allow for delays. Keep receipts for extra accommodation, since some policies cover them.

Can I visit Upper Mustang in winter?

It is possible but cold, with snow on some sections and some lodges closed. Days are short and wind can be sharp. Winter suits experienced travellers who prefer solitude and are prepared for severe cold. Ask your operator about availability and safety before booking.

Are there medical facilities on the route?

There are small health posts in some villages, but they offer basic care only. Serious cases need transport to Jomsom, Pokhara or Kathmandu, which can take time. Carry a personal first-aid kit and tell your guide about any health issues. Insurance that covers evacuation is essential.

Can I trek with older parents?

Many families visit with older members, often using vehicles for some sections and adding rest days. Discuss health and fitness with a doctor, choose comfortable lodges and set a gentle pace. Make sure the operator knows about any conditions and is prepared with a plan.

What kind of clothing is best for photographs?

Wear comfortable, layered clothing in earth or bright colours that stand out against the landscape. A hat and sunglasses are essential for sun protection. Keep a warm layer handy for sunrise and sunset shoots, and protect your camera from dust.

How much does a jeep add to the cost?

Jeep costs depend on distance, season and vehicle availability. It can reduce days but adds fuel and driver costs. Ask your operator for a comparison.

Can I visit Upper Mustang in a short time?

With flights and jeeps, a trip of about eight to ten days is possible. It is a rushed schedule with less time to enjoy villages.

Do I need to book Tiji early?

Yes. Rooms and flights fill quickly, so book months ahead.

Is there a risk of altitude problems?

Altitude is moderate to high, and dryness adds to dehydration. Walk slowly and hydrate.

Can I photograph monasteries?

Photography is often restricted inside. Ask permission and respect rules.
