Altitude and acclimatisation on Yala Peak

2 min read

Yala Peak reaches about 5,500 m, and the Langtang approach gains height quickly from a low start. In about four days you go from around 1,550 m at Syabrubesi to nearly 3,900 m at Kyanjin Gompa. That makes careful acclimatisation important, even though the climb is not technical. This is general guidance only, and it does not replace medical advice or your guide's decisions.

How the approach helps

The valley route climbs steadily, with sensible stages. Most healthy trekkers cope well to Kyanjin. The rest day there, with a walk up Kyanjin Ri and a return to sleep low, is the most important acclimatisation step of the trip. After that, the camps above Kyanjin are the highest nights you spend, so the pace should slow.

Early signs to watch for

  • A headache that does not ease with rest, water and simple pain relief.
  • Nausea, poor appetite or unusual tiredness.
  • Dizziness or very poor sleep.
  • Breathlessness that does not settle at rest.

Signs that mean descend now

Confusion, loss of coordination, a wet cough, breathlessness at rest or a severe headache are danger signs. Tell your guide at once and descend. Do not go higher while symptoms worsen. Your guide may carry a pulse oximeter and first-aid supplies, but numbers are only one piece of information.

Daily habits that help

  • Walk slowly and steadily, and take breaks.
  • Drink water and warm fluids through the day.
  • Eat regularly, even without appetite.
  • Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills.
  • Report how you feel each evening.

Summit day and altitude

On summit day you climb to about 5,500 m and come back down within a day. Cold, dehydration and tiredness make altitude symptoms feel worse. Start with a warm drink, keep eating small snacks and tell your guide if you feel unwell. If you do, the best answer is usually to turn around.

Medicines and insurance

Discuss preventive medicines with a doctor before you travel, not on the trail. Make sure your insurance covers climbing to 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation, and keep policy details with you.
