Getting to the Yala Peak: flights, roads and transfers

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Yala Peak is reached by road. A full-day drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi leads to a three-day walk up the Langtang valley to Kyanjin Gompa, below the peak.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

The drive takes seven to nine hours by jeep or bus on a road that is rough in places. Start early. Syabrubesi is at roughly 1,500 m.

Up the valley

Walk through Lama Hotel, Langtang village and Kyanjin Gompa at about 3,870 m over three days, passing forests, yak pastures and rebuilt villages.

Base camp

Yala Peak Base Camp is a half day above Kyanjin Gompa, with a high camp higher up. See the camp guide.

Return

Descend to Kyanjin and walk back down the valley in two to three days, then drive to Kathmandu.

Road conditions and options

The Syabrubesi road is rough and dusty, with landslide risk in the monsoon. A private jeep is more comfortable and faster than a bus. Start before seven in the morning to arrive in daylight. Carry water, snacks and a warm layer, since the road climbs through cold shadows.

Costs and timing

A shared bus is cheap but slow, a jeep is more expensive. Budget a full day each way. Add a reserve day in case of landslides. Book the vehicle through your operator, who can arrange a reliable driver.

Using the valley for acclimatisation

The three-day walk to Kyanjin Gompa builds acclimatisation. Spend a day at Kyanjin and climb Kyanjin Ri, about 4,773 m, before heading to base camp. This approach improves your chances of a good summit day.

Buffer

Landslides can block the road in monsoon. Add a spare day. See the logistics answers.

Check the road before you leave

Landslides and construction can slow the drive to Syabrubesi. Ask your operator for the latest conditions and plan an early start.

Walking days in the valley

The first days climb gently through forest, then open into the high valley. Walk slowly and enjoy the views, which also helps acclimatisation.

A realistic schedule

Day one is the drive to Syabrubesi. Days two to four are the walk to Kyanjin. A rest day and acclimatisation hike to Kyanjin Ri follow, then base camp, summit day and the return. Allow ten to twelve days overall with a spare day for weather.

Costs and transport options

Private vehicles cost more but save time and give flexibility. Shared jeeps are cheaper. Ask your operator about the road conditions and who pays for delays.
