Yala Peak (about 5,732 m) in Langtang is one of the most accessible trekking peaks for Indian climbers: no visa, no flights and a day by road from Kathmandu. It still needs a guide, a permit and decent fitness.
Entry and documents
Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter Nepal and may arrive by air or by land. Carry a valid passport or voter ID card, which are the documents normally accepted, and check the current rules shortly before you travel because requirements can change. Keep photocopies and a digital copy in a separate bag. Yala Peak needs an NMA climbing permit and the Langtang National Park permit, both arranged by a registered agency. Share passport details and insurance early.
Why it suits first-time climbers
Yala has a straightforward glacier route and a lower summit than Island Peak, so it is often chosen as a first Himalayan climb. The summit day is still long and cold. See how hard Yala Peak is.
Food and diet
Lodges at Kyanjin Gompa serve vegetarian dal bhat, noodles, soup and local yak cheese dishes. Base camp meals are cooked by your crew, who can accommodate vegetarian and Jain needs with notice.
Money
Nepali rupees are the currency on the trail. Small Indian notes are accepted in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but villages prefer Nepali cash and higher Indian denominations are not allowed in Nepal, so withdraw or exchange before you start walking. There are no ATMs in Langtang, so withdraw in Kathmandu and keep small notes for tea and charging.
Timing and leave
Ten to twelve days from Kathmandu is typical. April to May and October to November are best. Add a spare day for road delays. See how many days to allow.
Preparing for first-time snow
Practice walking in boots with a loaded pack and learn basic crampon use. Your guide will teach technique before the summit.
Leave and flights
Pick dates with a spare day on each side. Delays to flights home are costly if you have fixed work commitments.
Why Yala suits first-time climbers
At about 5,732 m it is lower than most trekking peaks and has a gentle approach through Langtang. You still need fitness, a guide and basic crampon practice. Many Indian climbers use it as a first Himalayan climb.
Food and language
Vegetarian food is easy to find along the valley, and staff speak Hindi. Carry snacks for the summit day, and tell your guide about dietary needs.
