Makalu Base Camp trek: quick health and gear answers

Are there leeches?

In warm, wet months the lower forests have leeches. Wear long trousers, gaiters and repellent on socks, and check your legs at rest stops.

What if I get altitude sickness?

Tell your guide at once. Mild symptoms may improve with rest, but worsening symptoms mean you must descend. Do not go higher while ill.

Is a helicopter evacuation possible?

In some places, weather and landing sites permitting, and it needs insurance cover. Check your policy and your operator's rescue plan.

Is the water safe?

Use boiled, filtered or treated water. Your crew will provide it, and you should carry purification tablets as a backup.

Are there medical posts?

Facilities are very limited, so carry a personal first-aid kit, your own medicines and insurance details.

Is there mobile signal?

Signal is patchy or absent for much of the route. Tell family not to expect daily contact.

Can I rent gear in Kathmandu?

Yes, including sleeping bags, jackets and poles. Check quality and fit and test items before you leave.
