How many days should I allow for the Makalu trek?
Plan 21 to 23 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. Eighteen is a practical minimum for experienced trekkers, and the extra days give a safety margin for weather and flights.
Which month is best?
April, May, October and November. The monsoon, from June to September, is not recommended, and winter is cold with snow in the upper valley.
Do I need a guide and porters?
Plan to trek with a licensed guide, and use porters, because the route is remote and camping may be needed. Your operator will arrange them.
Is the trek suitable for a first Himalayan trek?
It is not recommended. Start with a shorter, busier route to learn how you cope with altitude and long days.
Are there lodges all the way?
Not all the way. Lower villages have simple lodges or home-stays, but higher up many itineraries use camping. Confirm the plan with your operator.
Should I book early?
For autumn and spring, book three to four months ahead for flights, staff and permits.
Can I combine it with another trek?
Some travellers combine Makalu with Everest region treks, but it needs extra weeks and a careful schedule. Discuss it with your operator.
