Makalu, Everest and Kanchenjunga are three of the world's great mountains, and each has a trek to its base. They are very different experiences. Everest is busy and well-supported, Makalu is quiet and rugged, and Kanchenjunga is longer and more remote still. Choosing between them depends on time, comfort and how much solitude you want.
Everest Base Camp
The Everest trek takes about two weeks, reaches 5,364 m at base camp and has lodges at every stop. It is the most famous trek in Nepal, with many trekkers in the main seasons. It is easier to organise and safer to improvise on, but also more crowded and more commercial.
Makalu Base Camp
The Makalu trek takes about three weeks, reaches roughly 4,800 m and has far fewer services. It is quiet, wild and varied, with a long approach through forest and valleys. You will often see more wildlife and fewer people than on Everest. It needs more logistics, simple lodging or camping and tolerance for long days.
Kanchenjunga
The Kanchenjunga trek is even longer and more remote, often three to four weeks, with two base camps and high altitude. It needs serious fitness, a flexible schedule and a good operator.
Quick comparison
- Easiest and best supported: Everest Base Camp.
- Quiet and wild with moderate altitude: Makalu Base Camp.
- Longest and most remote: Kanchenjunga.
