Getting to the Manaslu trailhead and back to Kathmandu

3 min read

The Manaslu Circuit does not start from an airport, so transport is part of the adventure. Plan for long road days on both ends.

The start

Most groups drive from Kathmandu to the area around Arughat and Soti Khola, where the trail follows the Budhi Gandaki. The road beyond may be rough in places and can be affected by rain and landslides. The drive normally takes most of a day, and conditions change from year to year.

Walking or driving further

As roads extend up the valley, some operators choose to drive past the early villages. Walking the lower valley gives a gentler start and more time for acclimatisation, so we generally prefer it. Ask about the current road state when you plan.

The finish

The circuit generally finishes in the Dharapani area, joining the Annapurna Circuit road. From there, you travel by road to Besisahar and onward to Kathmandu or Pokhara. This is another long day, so avoid scheduling an international flight on the same day.

Buffer

Allow at least one spare day after the trek, especially in the monsoon, when landslides can block roads.

Vehicle choice

  • Private jeep: flexible and faster for small groups.
  • Shared or public bus: cheaper but slower and less comfortable.

Tips

Bring snacks, water and motion-sickness tablets if needed. Keep your passport and permit copies in your daypack.

The road to the start

The drive from Kathmandu to the start typically takes most of a day and follows winding roads through hills and valleys. The surface can be rough, and landslides sometimes cause delays, especially in or after the monsoon. Start early, carry water and snacks and take motion sickness remedies if needed. Choose a reliable vehicle and driver.

Seeing the countryside

The journey is also a chance to see rural Nepal, with terraced fields, small towns and rivers. Take time to enjoy the scenery and consider breaking the trip with an overnight stop if you prefer a shorter drive on the first day. A relaxed start helps you adjust before the trek.

The return trip

At the end, you may drive from a trailhead such as Dharapani or Besisahar to Kathmandu or Pokhara. Allow a spare day in case of road closures. Do not plan an international flight on the day you finish the trek, because delays on the road can happen.

Tips for the drive

  • Sit near the front if you are prone to car sickness.
  • Keep your passport and permits in your daypack.
  • Take cash for tea stops and tips.

The drive in numbers

The drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola usually takes seven to nine hours depending on road conditions and stops. Parts of the road are rough, especially after the monsoon. A private jeep is more comfortable than a bus, but costs more. Start early and expect delays.

Planning your finish

After crossing Larkya La you descend to Bimthang and Dharapani, where roads connect to Besisahar. From there you can travel to Pokhara or Kathmandu. Allow a full day for the road journey and a buffer day before flights.
