Mera Peak: quick answers about the climb

3 min read

How high is Mera Peak?

The commonly climbed central summit is about 6,461 metres, with other summits nearby.

Is it technical?

Not very on the standard route. It is mostly glacier walking, with a steeper section near the top.

Do I need previous experience?

There is no formal requirement, but altitude trekking experience and basic skills practice are strongly advised.

Do I need a guide?

Yes. The Mera Peak trek is on the list of routes where a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card are required.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. A climbing permit is arranged through a registered agency.

How many days are needed?

Roughly seventeen to twenty days, including flights.

When is the best time?

Autumn and spring.

Is the summit guaranteed?

No. Weather, altitude and conditions affect every attempt.

Can I rent the gear?

Yes, most technical gear can be rented in Kathmandu. Check boots and fit.

How cold is it?

Very cold at high camp and on summit day. Bring good layers and warm gloves.

How long is the summit day on Mera Peak?

Summit day is usually long, often eight to twelve hours depending on pace and conditions. It begins in the dark, crosses the glacier slowly and returns to high camp or base camp the same day.

Do I need crampons and an ice axe?

Yes. You will wear crampons on the glacier, and an ice axe provides balance and safety. Your guide will show you how to use both before the climb.

What makes Mera Peak easier than other peaks?

The slopes are gentle and the route does not involve steep technical sections, but altitude and cold still make it demanding. It is often described as the highest trekking peak in Nepal.

Can beginners climb Mera Peak?

Beginners with good fitness, patience and the right support can succeed, but experience of trekking at altitude is a big advantage. Preparation matters more than technical skill.

What happens if I feel unwell during the approach?

Tell your guide immediately. Rest, extra fluids and a slower pace may help, but descent is the safest response to worsening symptoms. A good itinerary includes flexibility for such situations.

How high is Mera Peak compared with Island Peak?

Mera Peak is about 6,476 metres, while Island Peak is about 6,189 metres. Mera is higher but less technical, while Island has a steeper headwall.

Can I climb Mera Peak without a guide?

No. A licensed guide is required and strongly recommended for safety. The glacier has crevasses, and weather can change quickly.

What is the success rate?

It depends on weather, acclimatisation and the quality of the support team. Well-planned trips with spare days and good guides have higher success rates than rushed ones.

Do I need previous mountaineering experience?

Not necessarily, but trekking experience at altitude helps. Basic skills are taught at base camp, and a short course beforehand is useful.

How cold is it on summit day?

Very cold, often minus 15 to minus 25 degrees Celsius with wind chill. Layering and warm gloves and boots are crucial.
