Pokalde Peak is a moderate climb by Himalayan standards. The main challenge is altitude near 5,800 m and a long summit day, not technical difficulty. You should be fit, have trekked above 4,500 m before, and be ready to use crampons and an ice axe.
Altitude
Most of the difficulty is the height. A day spent above 5,000 m is tiring even for fit people. Take the acclimatisation days seriously and watch for headache, nausea or loss of balance.
Terrain
Expect a steady climb on rock and snow, with steeper sections protected by ropes. Snow conditions change with the season and the weather.
Skills
You should know how to walk in crampons, hold an ice axe and use a harness. Your guide can teach you these basics before the climb, but practise at home if you can.
Equipment
You need mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe and warm layers. Most gear can be rented in Kathmandu.
Weather
Weather can change fast. Be ready to turn back if the wind is strong or the snow is bad. A good guide will decide this calmly and early.
How to train
Hike with a loaded pack for hours, climb stairs, and do long weekend walks. Add cardiovascular work for three months before you go. Practise on snow if you can.
Turning back
A good climb includes a good decision to turn back. Wind, poor snow or a slow pace can all be reasons. The summit is optional, and getting home is not.
