Pokalde Peak, about 5,800 m, is a trekking peak in the Everest region near Dingboche and the Kongma La. It is often chosen as a first Himalayan climb, usually a long day on snow with a high camp. It suits fit trekkers who have been above 5,000 m.
Where it is
Pokalde stands in the Khumbu, above the Lobuche and Dingboche valleys, close to the Kongma La pass. It is also written Pokhalde in some sources. The peak is reached from the Everest Base Camp trail, so it combines easily with the standard trek.
Height and status
Pokalde is about 5,800 m. It is one of the peaks that Nepal licenses as a trekking peak, which means a climbing permit is required but a full expedition is not. Check the current classification and fees with us for your dates.
Why people choose it
It gives views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Makalu from a summit that is lower and easier than Island Peak or Mera Peak. It is a good test of how you feel above 5,500 m.
What it involves
You climb on rock and snow, wearing crampons and using an ice axe, with a guide and fixed ropes on steeper sections. You do not need a technical background, but you need to be strong and comfortable with heights.
Who it suits
Fit trekkers who want a first climb, or who have done Everest Base Camp and want a challenge. If you have no experience of altitude, do a standard trek first.
Equipment list in short
Bring mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe, a warm down jacket, a shell, gloves of two weights, goggles, sun protection and a head torch. You can rent technical gear in Kathmandu, but try boots and crampons on before you go.
Questions people ask first
Do I need climbing experience? Not formal experience, but you need to be fit and willing to learn basic skills. Can I do it right after Everest Base Camp? Yes, with a rest day, but plan it from the start. What if the weather is bad? Your guide will choose another day or turn back.
