Pokalde is lower, shorter and quieter than Island Peak. It is a good first climb if you want a gentler introduction. Island Peak is higher and more technical, with a final steep headwall, and is the more famous choice.
Height
Pokalde is about 5,800 m. Island Peak is about 6,200 m, which means the summit day is longer and colder.
Technical level
Pokalde has less technical climbing. Island Peak has a steeper section near the top that often needs fixed rope and jumars.
Crowds
Island Peak is a popular peak with many teams at the busy times. Pokalde is quieter, so there is less queueing on ropes.
Time
Pokalde is usually a shorter trip, because the base camp is closer to Dingboche. Island Peak adds a few days.
Which to choose
Choose Pokalde if you want a test climb, or if you have less time. Choose Island Peak if you want the better-known summit and are willing to train for it.
Combining the two
Some climbers do Pokalde first as a warm-up and then Island Peak. This is a longer trip but a strong progression. Ask us about the combined plan.
