Pokhara is a relaxed lakeside town and a good place to spend a day before or after a trek. Add a spare day at both ends so that a late bus or a delayed flight does not spoil your plan.
Phewa Lake
The lake is the centre of Pokhara, with boats for hire and cafes along the shore. A slow paddle in the morning is a good way to ease stiff legs after a trek.
Sarangkot
Sarangkot is a hill above the town that is popular for sunrise views of the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre. You can drive up or walk. Go early to beat the clouds.
World Peace Pagoda
A white stupa on a ridge across the lake, reached by a boat ride and a walk. It gives a calm view of the lake and the mountains.
Gear and last-minute shopping
Lakeside has many shops that sell or rent trekking gear, and most trekkers find what they forgot. Try boots and jackets on, and check zips and seams. Also see buying trek gear in Kathmandu for tips that apply in Pokhara too.
Money and supplies
Withdraw cash before you start, because machines on the trail are few. Stock up on snacks, batteries and any medicines you need, and carry smaller notes for tea houses.
After the trek
Take time to wash clothes, eat well, and rest. A massage or a gentle lake walk helps. Keep a spare day before an onward flight in case weather or flights change.
Eating well
Pokhara has restaurants for all budgets, from momos and dal bhat to pizza and baked goods. After a trek, many people want fresh vegetables and a proper coffee. Choose busy places with fresh food, and be careful with salads and ice if your stomach is sensitive.
Getting around
Taxis and local buses link Lakeside with the trailheads and with the airport. Fix the fare before you set out, or ask your hotel to book. Traffic builds up in the busy season, so leave extra time for flights and early buses.
Keeping spare days
Weather can delay flights and roads, especially in the monsoon. If you have a tight schedule, add a spare day before a long-haul flight so that a delay does not cost you the ticket.
