A typical Baruntse expedition takes 30 to 35 days from Kathmandu, including the walk-in, acclimatisation, the climb and spare days for weather. A common plan includes Mera Peak or a high trek to prepare before moving to base camp.
Days 1 to 10
Fly to Lukla and walk to the Hunku valley, climbing slowly and sleeping higher every few days. A day or two of rest help adaptation.
Days 10 to 15
Many teams climb Mera Peak or cross the Mera La as acclimatisation, then continue to Baruntse base camp.
Days 15 to 25
At base camp, they rest, train on the lower slopes and wait for a weather window. They then move through high camps and attempt the summit.
Days 25 to 35
After the climb the team returns to Lukla and Kathmandu. A few spare days at the end protect against delayed flights.
Weather windows
Summit days depend on a window of calm weather. Plan spare days, and be willing to wait or turn back.
Daily life in camp
Expect early starts, simple food, a lot of tea and long evenings in the tent. Bring books, music and patience.
