Baruntse experience and fitness: are you ready?

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

You should have climbed at least one peak above 6,000 m, be comfortable on snow and ice with crampons and ropes, and be very fit before attempting Baruntse. If you have not climbed above 6,000 m, start with Mera or Island Peak.

Previous climbing

Good preparation is a successful climb of a 6,000 m peak, ideally in the Himalaya. This tells you how your body handles altitude.

Skills

You should be able to climb with crampons and an ice axe, use a harness and jumar on fixed rope, and manage a rappel.

Fitness

Train for months, with long hikes with a pack, running or cycling for endurance and strength work. A long expedition needs a strong base.

Health

Altitude illness is a real risk. Get a medical check before you go, and carry insurance that covers expedition climbing and helicopter rescue.

Training plan in short

Train for six months, with cardio, strength and long loaded hikes. Add a high-altitude trip before the climb if you can.

Gear you should know

Double boots, a high-altitude down suit or jacket, a warm sleeping bag, harness, crampons, ice axe and jumars are the core. Rent what you do not own and test it first.
