Kyanjin Gompa, at about 3,870 m, is the last settled village in the Langtang valley and the best base for seeing Langtang Lirung. Most trekkers spend two nights here and use the spare day for a viewpoint climb.
The village
Kyanjin Gompa is a small settlement of lodges, a monastery and a cheese factory at the head of the valley. Langtang Lirung stands above it to the south, and the glaciers and ridges at the head of the valley close the horizon. It is a peaceful place, once you are away from the main lodge area.
Kyanjin Ri
Kyanjin Ri is a steep hill of about 4,770 m above the village, and it takes two to three hours up. From the top you see Langtang Lirung and many of its neighbours at close range. Start early, as cloud often builds by late morning.
Tserko Ri
Tserko Ri, at around 4,980 m, is a higher viewpoint and a longer day. It is usually done by trekkers who feel well and have a spare day. The view takes in a wide panorama of snow peaks, and the climb needs steady pacing and a headtorch for an early start.
The glacier valley
A gentler walk goes up the valley towards the moraines of the Lirung glacier. It is useful as an acclimatisation walk. Keep to the path, since moraine edges are loose and avalanche paths cross some slopes.
Local food and culture
Yak cheese from the Kyanjin factory is a local speciality, and the monastery shows Tibetan Buddhist traditions that are central to the valley. Ask before photographing people or inside the monastery, and walk clockwise around prayer walls.
How to use two nights
Arrive early on day one for a short walk, then climb Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri on day two. On day three descend to Lama Hotel or beyond. A spare day helps if weather or health requires it.
