The Langtang valley: people, villages and culture below Langtang Lirung

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Langtang valley is home to Tamang communities with a strong Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Walking through it with respect for local customs is part of the journey, as well as the views of Langtang Lirung.

The Tamang people

The Tamang are one of the largest groups in the hills north of Kathmandu. Their language, clothing and festivals have close links with Tibetan culture. In Langtang, many families farm barley and potatoes, keep yaks and run lodges for trekkers.

Prayer flags, mani walls and chortens

Along the path you pass long stone walls carved with prayers (mani walls) and white stupas (chortens). Walk to the left of them, so that you keep them on your right. Do not climb on them or move the stones.

Village life

The valley villages are small, and many lodges are run by local families. Staying in them supports households that rely on the trekking season. Buy tea, snacks and meals locally, and carry cash because there are no banks in the valley.

The 2015 earthquake

Langtang was hit hard by the April 2015 earthquake, which caused a large avalanche and landslide and destroyed villages and many lives. The valley has been rebuilt over the years, and it is a place to visit quietly and with respect. Our Langtang Lirung overview has more.

Festivals and seasons

Local festivals follow the Tibetan and Nepali calendars, and the valley is busier in spring and autumn. If you meet a ceremony, watch quietly and ask your guide before taking photographs.

Respectful trekking

Dress modestly in villages, ask before photographing people, keep to paths, take rubbish out, and bargain gently if at all. Small kindnesses make the biggest difference in a quiet valley.
