Langtang Lirung and its neighbours: peaks you can see from the valley

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Langtang Lirung, at 7,227 m, is the highest peak in the valley, but it is not alone. Langtang Ri and Dorje Lakpa are other high peaks nearby, and Yala Peak and Naya Kanga are climbs that trekkers can consider.

Langtang Lirung

At 7,227 m, Langtang Lirung dominates the head of the valley from Kyanjin Gompa. It is climbed rarely, and has a reputation as a serious mountain with avalanche risk.

Langtang Ri

Langtang Ri, about 7,205 m, stands on the border with Tibet at the head of the valley. See our Langtang Ri guide for its details and how to see it.

Dorje Lakpa

Dorje Lakpa, about 6,966 m, rises to the east of the valley and is best seen from Helambu and Gosainkunda. Read the Dorje Lakpa guides.

Yala Peak

Yala Peak is a trekking peak above Kyanjin Gompa. It is the usual first summit for climbers in the valley. See our Yala Peak guides.

Naya Kanga and Tserko Ri

Naya Kanga, about 5,800 m, is another popular trekking peak in the area, while Tserko Ri is a viewpoint at roughly 4,980 m. Both offer wide views of the high peaks.

Telling them apart

The skyline looks different from every viewpoint, and local names sometimes differ from map names. Ask your guide to point them out and write the names beside your photographs.

Which peak for which traveller

If you only want to see a great mountain, Langtang Lirung from Kyanjin Gompa is the sight to aim for. If you want to stand on a summit, Yala Peak is the realistic goal for a fit first-time climber with a guide, while Naya Kanga is a step up. The higher peaks around the valley are for expedition teams.

Reading a map

Nepali and Tibetan names often differ, and several peaks have more than one name. Heights quoted in books also vary by a few metres because of different surveys. Use the heights in our guides as a guide, and check recent maps for the exact figure if it matters to you.

Best time to see them

Clear skies are most likely in the first hours after dawn in October, November, March and April. Afternoon clouds often hide the summits. Plan viewpoint climbs for the early morning.
