Langtang Ri is a 7,205 m peak on the border of Nepal and Tibet, at the head of the Langtang valley. It is close in height to Langtang Lirung, the highest peak in the range, and is seen from Kyanjin Gompa and the high ridges nearby.
At the end of the valley
The Langtang trek ends at Kyanjin Gompa, and above it the valley is closed by a wall of peaks. Langtang Ri stands on the border, with a height of 7,205 m (23,638 ft).
The first ascent
The first ascent was made in 1981. Its remote position and border location make climbs rare.
Seeing it
From Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri, viewpoints above Kyanjin Gompa, the mountain rises over the glacier. See the Langtang guides and the Langtang Lirung guide.
Border area
Parts of the high valley near the border are restricted. Follow your guide, and do not go beyond permitted areas.
Season
October to November and April to May.
Common questions
Is Langtang Ri higher than Langtang Lirung? No, Lirung is higher. Can I climb it? Only with a special permit.
Kyanjin Gompa and its viewpoints
Kyanjin Gompa is a small village with a monastery, a cheese factory and simple lodges. Two classic viewpoints, Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri, offer views of the glaciers and peaks. Tserko Ri is higher and gives the wider view, though it is a long climb.
After the earthquake
The Langtang valley was badly damaged in 2015 and the community has rebuilt. Trekking supports the recovery, and the lodges welcome visitors. Your visit makes a real difference.
Wildlife and culture
The valley is home to Tamang people and to red pandas in the forests. Yak herds graze the high meadows. The cheese is a local speciality.
How long to allow
A typical Langtang trek takes seven to ten days from Kathmandu, with a side trip to Kyanjin Ri. Add a spare day for weather.
More questions
Can I trek to Langtang Ri? Not as an ordinary trek, because it is a high border peak. Can I see it from Kyanjin Gompa? Yes, from the high viewpoints on a clear day. Is it dangerous? The peak itself is for expert climbers only.
Planning a Langtang trip
A good plan is to walk up to Kyanjin Gompa in four to five days, spend a full day at the top for a viewpoint walk, and return in two to three days. Add a spare day for weather. October, November and April are the best months, and the valley is quiet in winter.
