The Makalu Base Camp trek starts in the east of Nepal, far from Kathmandu. Most itineraries use a flight to Tumlingtar, which saves a long road journey. A road route also exists and is used by some groups, but it takes much longer. Weather and road conditions can disrupt either, so the schedule should include spare time.
The flight to Tumlingtar
The flight takes about 40 minutes and gives views of the eastern Himalaya on a clear day. Small aircraft are used, and baggage limits are strict, so pack light. Flights depend on weather, and delays and cancellations are common, especially in the monsoon and in hazy or cloudy spells. Morning flights are more reliable than afternoon ones.
Luggage
The limit is small, usually around 15 kg including hand luggage. Your operator can store extra bags in Kathmandu. Carry essentials, such as medicines, boots and warm layers, in your hand luggage in case checked bags are delayed.
The road alternative
You can travel overland by road, often via Biratnagar or other eastern towns and onward by jeep. The road is long, often rough and affected by landslides in wet weather. It costs less than flying in some cases but takes one or two extra days each way. Ask your operator which option they plan and what happens if the flight is cancelled.
Planning for delays
- Keep a spare day before the trek and another after it.
- Do not book an international flight on the day you plan to return.
- Ask what the plan is for a flight cancelled for several days.
- Check that your insurance covers flight delays and changes.
Returning
The return flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu has the same limits and weather risk. Some flights route via Biratnagar. Allow time and keep a flexible attitude.
