Mera Peak: quick answers on the remote approach and support

3 min read

Why does the Mera Peak trek feel so remote?

It leaves the main Everest trail soon after Lukla and follows a quieter valley, so villages are smaller and trekkers are fewer.

What is Khare?

Khare is the last settlement before the glacier. Climbers rest there, check equipment and practise rope and crampon skills.

Are the lodges as comfortable as in Namche?

No. Expect simpler rooms, fewer menu choices and less heating.

How is rescue organised so far from busy trails?

Your guide contacts the operator and insurer, and a helicopter can be requested when the weather permits. Walking down is often the first step.

Can I rely on a phone signal?

Not really. Some villages have patchy coverage, but camps have almost none, so tell family in advance.

Should I carry all my cash from Kathmandu?

Yes, in small notes. There are no machines along this route.

What if the Lukla flight is delayed on the way out?

Keep a spare day before your international flight and ask your operator how rebooking works.

Can I leave unneeded luggage in Kathmandu?

Most hotels hold bags. Confirm this when you book and carry only what the trek needs.

Is it better to climb Mera alone or with a group?

A group shares costs and company. A private trip gives control of the pace. Both use a registered agency and a guide.

Can I add a second peak afterwards?

Some climbers continue to Island Peak after a recovery period, which lengthens the expedition considerably.

Is there electricity along the route?

Lodges have limited power, often solar, and charging may cost extra. Carry a power bank and keep batteries warm to preserve charge.

How do I get back from Lukla?

Most climbers fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. Flights depend on weather, so keep buffer days at the end of the trip.

Are there any shops along the way?

Small shops in villages sell basics, but supplies are limited and prices increase with altitude. Bring essentials and treats from Kathmandu.

Do I need a porter?

Porters carry the main bags, allowing you to focus on walking and acclimatising. Most operators include them in the package, so confirm weight limits.

How do I stay clean on the trek?

Use wet wipes, a small towel and hand sanitiser. Hot showers are available in some lower lodges but not higher up, so plan accordingly.

Can I charge my phone along the way?

Lodges offer charging for a fee, but power is limited. Bring a power bank, solar charger and spare batteries, and keep devices warm.

What if I need to leave early?

Tell your guide. Evacuation or descent depends on the situation and location. Your operator and insurer will advise on options.

Are there toilets at camp?

Yes, simple toilet tents or pits. Carry out toilet paper if instructed, and use hand sanitiser.

How do I get back after the summit?

Most groups descend to Khare and walk to Lukla for a flight to Kathmandu. Allow spare days in case flights are delayed.

Can I tip staff in Nepali rupees?

Yes. Tips are customary and appreciated. Ask your operator for a typical range and hand over the tip in an envelope at the end of the trip.
