Mera Peak vs Island Peak: which suits you better?

3 min read

Mera Peak and Island Peak are two of Nepal's best-loved trekking peaks. They offer very different experiences, so it helps to understand how they differ.

Altitude

Mera Peak reaches a higher summit than Island Peak, so it demands greater tolerance of thin air and cold. Both are above six thousand metres.

Technical difficulty

Island Peak has a steeper headwall and sections of fixed rope and crevasse crossing. Mera Peak is mostly a glacier walk with a short steeper stretch near the top. If steep ice worries you, Mera may feel easier, but altitude and cold may be tougher.

Approach and scenery

Island Peak follows the busy Everest Base Camp trail, which gives views of famous mountains and excellent acclimatisation. Mera Peak uses a quieter route through the Hinku valley, with more solitude and simpler lodges.

Crowds

Island Peak tends to be busier in peak season. Mera Peak has fewer visitors, but its base area can still be busy during October.

Time

Both take roughly two and a half weeks. Combining them in one trip is possible and makes a longer expedition.

Quick guide

  • Want to learn basic technical skills: Island Peak.
  • Prefer a long glacier walk and a quieter route: Mera Peak.
  • Experienced and want a bigger challenge: consider Lobuche East.

Tell us your background and we will recommend a plan.

Which is more suitable for a first climb

Mera Peak is often chosen for a first Himalayan climb because it is less technical, though it is higher. Island Peak includes a steep headwall and fixed rope sections, so it demands more climbing skill but offers a shorter approach. Think about whether you prefer altitude and remoteness or technical challenge and a faster itinerary.

Trip style

Mera involves a longer, quieter trek through the Hinku valley, while Island Peak is usually combined with the busier Everest region. Your preference for solitude, lodge quality and scenery may help you decide.

Which is better for your first peak

If you want a gradual introduction to glacier travel and do not mind a long approach, Mera Peak is a good choice. If you want a more compact trip with a technical component, Island Peak suits better. Both need good fitness and acclimatisation, and both are rewarding.

Comparing views

Mera's summit offers a view of five eight-thousanders and a vast, remote landscape. Island Peak offers close views of Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam, with the Imja valley below. Both are spectacular in different ways.

Doing both

Some climbers combine the two in one trip over four to five weeks, or in successive seasons. If you plan both, climb Island Peak first as a stepping stone, and use the experience to prepare for Mera.
