The route
The trail runs up the Kali Gandaki valley through Eklebhatti and Kagbeni, then climbs to Jharkot and Muktinath, a pilgrimage site holy to Hindus and Buddhists. A road now covers the same route.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Winds in the Kali Gandaki build through the day, so start in the morning. See the Kagbeni guide and the Jomsom Muktinath guides.
Common questions
- Is there a road? Yes, jeeps run between Jomsom and Muktinath.
- Is Muktinath high? At about 3,760 m, yes. Take it gradually if you are coming up quickly.
Reverse direction
Walking Muktinath to Jomsom is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
