The route
After landing at Lukla, the trail runs down through Chheplung and Ghat beside the Dudh Koshi River to Phakding. It is mostly downhill with a few short climbs and several suspension bridges.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
This is an easy first day, and a good place to take things slowly. Delays at Lukla airport are common, so keep a buffer day in your plans.
Common questions
- Is the first day easy? Yes. It is mostly gentle and ends at a lower altitude than Lukla.
- Can I go further than Phakding? Some groups do, but a gentle start helps your body adapt.
Reverse direction
Walking Phakding to Lukla is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
