The route
After the park gate the trail crosses the Dudh Koshi on the high Hillary suspension bridge and then climbs steeply in zigzags to Namche Bazaar. On clear days Everest can appear briefly on the way up.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
The climb after the last bridge is the effort of the day. Go slowly and rest often.
Common questions
- Is this the hardest day? It is one of the steepest climbs in the first days, but it is short.
- Do I get a view of Everest? Sometimes, from a point on the climb, if the weather is clear.
Reverse direction
Walking Namche Bazaar to Monjo is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
