- Typical time: 2 to 3 hours

The route
The trail climbs above Namche past the Everest View Hotel area, then drops gently to the twin villages of Khumjung and Khunde. It is a common acclimatisation hike and a view-rich detour.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Many trekkers do this as a day hike from Namche. Visit the school and the monastery in Khumjung if you have time.
Common questions
- Is this part of the main trail? No, it is a side trip from Namche, though it can be used as a route to Tengboche.
- Why do people go to Khumjung? For acclimatisation, views and the village, which is quieter than Namche.
Reverse direction
Walking Khumjung to Namche Bazaar is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
