The route
The trail contours along a hillside with views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, then drops to the river at Phunki Tenga and climbs steeply through forest to the Tengboche monastery.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
The final climb is steep and takes more time than the distance suggests. Tengboche monastery is worth a visit, and afternoon views can be clear.
Common questions
- Can I see Everest on this stage? On clear days, yes. Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam are all visible on the contour section.
- What is at Tengboche? The best-known monastery in the Khumbu, set among forest with views of Ama Dablam.
Reverse direction
Walking Tengboche to Namche Bazaar is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
