The route
The trail crosses the Imja Khola on a bridge, then climbs through the open hillside to Pangboche, which has one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu. Ama Dablam stands above the village.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Pangboche gives some of the best views of Ama Dablam. Respect the monastery customs if you visit.
Common questions
- What is special about Pangboche? Its old monastery and the close view of Ama Dablam.
- Is Pangboche a good place to sleep? Many groups pass through it, but it has simple lodges and is a calmer stop than Dingboche.
Reverse direction
Walking Pangboche to Deboche is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
