The route
A short, gentle walk down through rhododendron and pine forest to the small settlement of Deboche, which has lodges and a nunnery nearby.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
This is a short stretch, so many groups combine it with the walk on to Pangboche. Look for birds in the forest.
Common questions
- Why walk to Deboche? It has quieter lodges than Tengboche and a slightly lower sleeping altitude.
- Is there a nunnery? Yes, a small one is near Deboche.
Reverse direction
Walking Deboche to Tengboche is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
