The route
The trail follows the Imja valley up past Bibre, with Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Island Peak in view. Chhukung is the last settlement before Island Peak Base Camp and the Three Passes route.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Chhukung is a popular acclimatisation hike from Dingboche, with Chhukung Ri above it for those who want a higher viewpoint.
Common questions
- What is Chhukung known for? It is the base for Island Peak and the Kongma La and Chola La pass routes.
- Do I need to go there for Base Camp? No, it is a side valley, though it makes a good acclimatisation trip.
Reverse direction
Walking Chhukung to Dingboche is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
