The route
The trail follows the Khumbu Glacier moraine over rough stones and small ups and downs, with views of Nuptse and Pumori. Gorak Shep is a group of lodges on an old lakebed.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Most trekkers sleep at Gorak Shep, then visit Base Camp and Kala Patthar on separate mornings or afternoons. Lodging is basic and cold.
Common questions
- Is Gorak Shep the end of the trail? It is the last settlement. Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar are day trips from there.
- Is the night at Gorak Shep tough? It is cold and high, and sleep can be poor, so bring a warm sleeping bag.
Reverse direction
Walking Gorak Shep to Lobuche is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
